Replit Explained: What It Is, How It Works
By Yuntao Zou, Founder, VentiMap@TaoMachina
Replit is an online workspace for building and publishing software. You can describe an app to Replit Agent, work on the generated code in your browser and put the app online. Its tools cover web and mobile projects, visual editing and connections to services such as Stripe.
For a business that starts with your idea, VentiMap brings research, a product and website, payments and ongoing work together. Your Manager follows the work, and you can begin with a free business report.
What is Replit used for?
You can use Replit to make a website, an application or an internal tool. A small business might use it for a booking flow, a dashboard or a customer portal. The workspace also supports working with existing code through connected repositories.
How does Replit Agent work?
- Describe what you want the app to do and who will use it.
- Use Agent to build or change the project through conversation.
- Try the preview, edit the design and ask for changes to the behavior.
- Publish the app and give users its live address.
For example, a client portal needs more than a welcome screen: a client signs in, opens their project and saves an update. Describing that complete journey gives you a clear flow to build and try.
Is Replit free? How much does it cost?
| Plan | Billed monthly | Annual-plan monthly equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $20 | $18, paid annually |
| Pro | $100 | $90, paid annually |
Replit has a free entry plan. Its paid pricing lists $20 in included usage for Core and a starting $100 allowance for Pro. The monthly subscription and the services your project uses both contribute to its running cost.
Agent uses effort-based pricing: the amount of work involved affects the charge. Credits also pay for services such as publishing, storage and databases. A prompt is therefore a request for work, rather than a fixed-price unit.
How do publishing and custom domains work?
A published app can use a replit.app address or a custom domain. To connect a domain you own, Replit provides the DNS records to add and supplies HTTPS for the published site.
Publishing is part of running the app. Its traffic, storage and other services draw on the usage budget, alongside the work spent building it.
Can you use GitHub with Replit?
Yes. Replit supports working with authorized GitHub and GitLab repositories. You can bring a codebase into the workspace, make changes and contribute work back through the repository workflow.
